Garlic has been taken on a roller coaster ride as home remedy against the common cold; for many years, it was sworn by as a legitimate mechanism to combat the seasonal flu. Then it was brought down from its high horse, and it was seen as a fool's errand to take it. A new study may help shed some light on this debate,a s there is some laboratory evidence that garlic may have antiviral and antibacterial properties.
The new study assessed over a three month period 146 participants, half of which took a garlic table and half that took a placebo tablet after which they proceeded to write down whenever they presented with flu symptoms. Results from the study showed that in fact those that took the garlic tablet had fever colds (24 incidences of the flu in the garlic group vs 65 in the placebo group). If the participants experienced a cold, however, the duration of the illness did not change. Side effects included a skin rash and door. I guess it is up to each person to decide if the side effects outweigh the potential benefits!
