The results are in – Ebola is officially the most popular topic on Facebook in 2014! U.S. Facebook users discussed Ebola more than the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, the Michael Brown protests, and – biggest surprise of all – Kim Kardashian’s butt. In addition to Facebook, the Ebola outbreak has also spread fear across Twitter, Instagram and other social media sites.
According to Hashtagify, #Ebola has a popularity score of 69.5, barely trailing behind #Obama’s 72.2. Hashtags that are commonly linked with #Ebola include #BREAKING, #Nigeria and #ISIS. (Perhaps Ebola really is the ISIS of viruses?) On the picture-sharing site, Instagram, journalists have started sharing intensely personal photos of the victims and fighters of Ebola to raise awareness and bring humanity into the media’s depiction of the outbreak.
In other news, the heightened interest in Ebola has caused a huge spike in downloads of Plague, Inc.
DNA points?! What kind of Ebola are they talking about? All filoviruses, including Ebola, are RNA based.
