The first domestic case of Chikungunya has been detected in Mexico; it was located in the state of Chiapas (which borders Guatemala), in the southwest of the country. The victim was an eight year old girl; she was eventually released from the hospital she was being treated at in the town of Arriaga.
This is not the first Latin American country the mosquito-borne viral disease is seen in; it has been making the rounds in the Caribbean and some Central American countries. El Salvador reported over thirty thousand cases in September. It was initially detected in the eastern Caribbean in early 2014, but is most commonly found in Asia and Africa.
