Several governments in sub-Saharan Africa have been considering the adoption of a new strategy to fight the spread of HIV: the distribution of prophylactic antiretroviral drugs. The strategy focuses on delivering these drugs to HIV "hot zones" identified using a computer model. The model takes into account geographic distribution of the target population, geographic variation in the concentration of HIV patients, and the geographic variation in the level of risk behavior.
When compared to conventional antiretroviral distribution strategies, the novel strategy would provide prophylaxis to the same number of people while helping prevent up to 40% more HIV infections.
