The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has warned that sperm donations from Miami-Dade, Palm Beach, and Broward counties may contain Zika virus. They recommend that would-be parents consider this risk if using samples from these three counties.
There has been a risk for Zika transmission in this area since June 2016, and thus the sperm samples in 12 sperm banks in these areas may be affected. Zika may survive in sperm for six months. So far there is no proof that infected sperm donations can give Zika virus to a woman, but the CDC advises to proceed with caution. The FDA, which regulates sperm donations, recommends that sperm banks shouldn't accept donations from men with the virus or those who have been in areas where the virus is prevalent.
