When a SARS-CoV-2 vaccine is finally licensed, every country in the world is going to need it. The nature of limited resources has already brought a great deal of competition into the market for experimental SARS-CoV-2 vaccines. Already, wealthy countries have purchased massive quantities of vaccines that haven’t even finished clinical trials. Take the Pfizer vaccine which has hit headlines following a successful, albeit very preliminary, clinical trial, for example. According to a spokesperson from the Center for Global Development, the wealthy countries of the world have already claimed 80% of the 1.3 billion doses that are expected to be manufactured in 2021.
According to NPR’s Up First podcast, the U.S. has pre-purchased enough vaccines to vaccinate its population four times over, and the U.K. and Canada have done the same. Why would they purchase so many extra vaccines? The issue is that no one knows which vaccines will work. Even the Pfizer vaccine which has been in the headlines for several days now could fall through with further testing on more diverse populations and greater numbers of people. By buying huge amounts of many different vaccines, wealthy nations are hedging their bets.
This is great news for people who live in wealthy countries since they’ll likely have quick access to a successful vaccine. But it’s not such great news for poor and middle income countries since they will have limited and delayed access to the vaccine. Some researchers estimate that people in poor countries may not be able to be vaccinated until 2023 or 2024.
