Recently today, we got a notification on our phone that 39 out of California’s 58 counties would be put in purple tier, according to the State of California’s COVID-19 Blueprint for a Safer Economy Framework. Here in Santa Clara County, we’ve moved from moderate risk to the widespread risk. San Mateo county has moved from the orange tier to the red substantial risk tier. Counties must adapt within 24 hours. Counties will continue to be assessed during the week.
This emergency break comes with a list of restrictions. People are no longer able to eat inside, go to gyms or workout facilities, or go to museums. Additionally, large gatherings (e.g. church gatherings, worship, funerals, weddings, large meetings) are no longer permitted.
Cases have been doubling the past 10 days. This represents the fastest increase California has seen ever. Now, the state’s positive rate is 4.6%. Governor Newsom has been troubled over the high amount, as two weeks ago the positivity rate was only 3.2%.
California also became the second state to have more than 1 million diagnosed cases of SARS-CoV-2. This reflects the general trend across the country of a second surge in coronavirus cases, after some states had almost flattened the curve. If left unchecked, hospitals and emergency rooms could soon be overwhelmed.
Additionally, a statewide curfew may be put in place in Los Angeles, just like how Paris was placed under curfew. This would maybe include closing outdoor restaurants early, as people have a tendency to linger around and use restaurants as bars.
