In 2018, members of the International Committee on the Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) put forth a proposal - move the genus Rubivirus out of the Togaviridae family (and away from genus Alphavirus) and into a new family, Matonaviridae [1]. This was approved in 2019 [2].
The name Matona comes from George de Maton of Germany, who in 1814 first distinguished rubella from measles and scarlet fever [3]. Personally, I think there are a few pitfalls to naming a viral family after someone. First, you never know what may eventually come to light about a person, even someone long dead. Second, there are benefits to naming viruses about something more related to the virus. Caliciviridae's cups, Nidovirales' nested transcripts, Retroviridae's reverse transcriptase. Matonaviridae doesn't tell us anything about the virus itself.
The announcement of this viral family means that we're now up to 29 human viral families! More fun for future classes to remember!
