While the ketogenic diet, which consists of a high-fat, low-carb approach, has a bit of a polarized view in the media, it does seem to combat an influenza infection in mice! Researchers found that the ketogenic diet blocked formation of inflammasomes, which cause harmful immune system responses in their host. The study found that mice fed on a low-fat diet had a higher rate of survival than rats fed a low carb diet. The ketogenic diet triggered the release of gamma delta T cells, immune system cells that produce mucus in the cell linings of the lung -- while the high-carbohydrate diet did not. Thus, the mice on the ketogenic diet were able to burn fat to produce ketone bodies from the food they ate in order to fuel the immune system to fight flu infection!
