A new study shows that African children of mothers who breastfeed and are exposed perinatally to HIV and ART exhibit lower weight and height.
This trial was conducted in both Uganda and Malawi. Two groups of children were compared: one that had been exposed to HIV and ART but had not been infected with the virus, and one that had not been exposed. Infants in the exposed group had significantly lower birth weights than the control group. In the Ugandan group, children between 1 and 2 years had significantly lower length compared to controls, and had significantly lower mean head circumference at 2 years. In Malawi, only the difference in length at 2 years was statistically significant.
This stunting of children is associated with poorer survival to the age of 5, obesity, and metabolic related complications, along with a higher risk of behavioral difficulties.
