Measles Death Toll in Samoa Continues to Rise, Over 50 Dead
The current measles outbreak in Samoa continues to claim even more lives, with 53 dead since the outbreak began. 48 of the 53 have been in children under the age of 4. Out of a population of 200,000 on the island, almost 3,700 cases have been recorded with a mortality rate of approximately 1.4%. This outbreak is thought to have occurred due to very low vaccine coverage, estimated to be about 37% before the outbreak began. This low vaccine coverage is thought to be a combination of both the temporary suspension of the countries immunization program after the death of two children who received the vaccine (the deaths were later found to be due to medications that were incorrectly mixed) and the deep religious beliefs of the island nation. Samoa declared a state of emergency on November 20th and has administered 58,150 vaccinations since the outbreak began. However, infection rates and deaths are still rising, and the Samoan government has enacted restrictions on public gatherings and travel.
