We can thank early humans for the modern-day genital herpes virus

HSV-2 is the virus responsible for most of genital herpes cases. The disease infects for life, and can be easily passed from person to person through sexual contact or from mother to child through the birth canal. Herpes caused by HSV-2 is mostly non-lethal, though it can sometimes cause serious complications for newborns.

Recent genetic sequencing of HSV-2 lineages reveals that the greatest diversity of HSV-2 is found in Africa, suggesting that early humans took HSV-2 with them as they migrated out of Africa. Specifically it seems that the virus must have been passed from chimpanzees to our early human ancestor during the times of Homo erectus or boisei. Some modes of this transfer are speculated to be bites and scratches from chimps, interbreeding between the two human ancestors, or one ancestor feeding on another.
