Week 8: Poxviridae: Monkeypox Outbreaks in Cameroon
There have been Monkeypox cases in Cameroon reported on 11/06. While Monkeypox is not new to the area, these cases must be closely monitored. The source of the virus for this patient is not known, however the bushmeat trade is traditionally thought to be the zoonotic source of many Monkeypox outbreaks in central and west Africa. Specifically, rodents are believed to be the Monkeypox reservoir.
As the percentage of people vaccinated with Vaccinia for Smallpox declines, the number of people susceptible to poxvirus infections rises. Vaccinia vaccination provides cross protective antibodies that protect individuals from Smallpox and Monkeypox. We can expect the number of Monkeypox cases to rise accordingly, especially with by human expansion into wild habitats. Perhaps with Monkeypox on the rise, it is time to consider Vaccinia vaccination in the area.
