Young patients with inflammatory bowel disease were five times more likely to develop viral infections leading to hospitalization or permanent organ damage, according to a recent study. Both IBD and thiopurines, a class of drugs used in around 60% of IBD patients, seem to drive systemic viral infection.
Thiopurines act as immunomodulators in the human body. It is a bit concerning that those with IBD taking thiopurines where six times more likely to develop SVI than this with IBD who had no treatment and had similar rates of SVI to the general population.
One of the more common SVIs noted in this study was Epstein Barr virus. An association was also found between the thiopurine use and hemophagocitic lymphohistiocytosis, an aggressive with high mortality rates. Almost 7 million people worldwide likely have IBD, either from Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis. More research should be done on IBD drugs and viral infections in order to prevent further harm to these individuals.
