Week 4: Arenaviruses:
On October 15th, a German biotech company Abalos Therapeutics launched a $12 million investigation for using modified arenaviruses for cancer immunotherapy. The idea is the target the arenavirus specifically to tumor cell, then allow the human immune system to carry out an immune attack on the infected cells.
In cancer, the immune system is often primed to ignore the tumors through a process known as immunoediting. Reactivating the immune system against the tumor is the goal of novel immunotherapies being developed at the Biotech giants. A herpesvirus-based immunotherapy, T-vec is current developed by Amgen, however the herpes viral infection usually leads to cell destruction. Arenavirus infections do not kill the host cell, which is why arenaviruses are being investigated as a novel vector; in order to propagate the infection to the entire tumor cell population without rapidly killing the cells and stopping the spread.
