Following up on Tad Henry's post about lax U.S. lab regulations, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has been fined $450,000 because an employee shipped unsealed vials of anthrax across the country in 2005.
Out of the 1,025 vials of anthrax sent to Palm Beach, two were missing caps and a third was not properly sealed. The next day the same employee send 3,000 vials of anthrax to Virginia without following packing regulations.
Lawrence Livermore says the lab has implemented new policies to prevent a similar incident in the future. Let's hope so.
