There has been a recent rise in Triple E [1], or Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus (EEEV) in the United States. As such, it is important to learn more about this rare Togaviridae/Alphavirus [2]. EEEV causes brain infection and is extremely rare [3]. As recently as Oct 8th, however, 3 horses were euthanized in Florida for potential EEEV infection, and 28 horses had been diagnosed in the state for 2019 [4]. It has a mortality rate of approximately 30% in humans, and infection tends to occur in eastern or Gulf Coast states. At risk populations are those who live in or near woodland habitats and people who work outside or participate in outdoor activities, because there is a greater risk of mosquito exposure [3].
Unfortunately, there is currently no specific treatment for EEEV. As such, if near an area with known EEEV incidents, the key is to prevent mosquito bites. Use insect repellant, wear long sleeves and pants when outside, empty standing water from containers, and drill holes in tire swings so water drains out [5].
