Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus (EEEV), a rare but
potentially fatal virus capable of causing encephalitis, has struck
Massachusetts, Michigan, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Pennsylvania. EEEV is a
mosquito-borne pathogen, with 426 mosquito samples in the US testing positive
this year. Its initial symptoms include fever, chills, and body aches, which
can progress into encephalitis, tremors, seizures, or paralysis. Additional
complications include coma, brain damage, or even death. In Massachusetts,
there are 35 communities at critical risk, 53 at high risk, and 121 at moderate
risk for EEEV. In addition, 9 cases in humans have been confirmed in Michigan.
11 people have died during this year’s recent outbreak in several states,
including Michigan, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. Officials are
advising people in affected areas to wear long sleeves and pants, apply
mosquito repellent, and vaccinate and spray their horses. There is no current
vaccine or treatment for humans.
