Indications for Xofluza, an antiviral used for influenza A and B, have been expanded by the FDA to include populations at high risk of developing complications following infection by the influenza virus [1].
Xofluza is an antiviral medication that targets and inhibits the "cap-snatching" process seen in the influenza virus polymerase complex. During this process, the PB2 subunit of the polymerase binds to the 5' cap and the PA subunit then cleaves the cap, providing an RNA primer for the virus. Xofluza inhibits the PA subunit, preventing it from getting the RNA primer [2].
Previous indication for Xofluza were uncomplicated influenza in healthy patients over the age of 12 who have not had symptoms for more than 48 hours [3]. The new indication includes patients with asthma, chronic lung disease, diabetes, heart disease, morbid obesity, and over the age of 65 [1].
This news comes after evidence from the phase 3 CAPSTONE-2 study that showed that treatment of individuals with high risk of flu complications with Xofluza resulted in a significant decrease in time for improvement of flu symptoms vs a placebo [1].
