Antibiotics have saved millions of human lives (1). With antibiotics, the key is smart and judicious use. They are phenomenal at eradicating bacterial infections, but they often decimate the patient's microbiome at the same time (1). However, their method of action - typically inhibiting cell wall synthesis or bacterial protein synthesis (2) - does not protect against viruses (3).
Recent news out of the Stanford School of Medicine, however, ropes viruses into the mix (4). Pulendran et al. demonstrate that antibiotic perturbation of the human gut microbiome appears to diminish the patient's vaccine immunity. Half the study participants received broad-spectrum antibiotics several days prior to influenza vaccination (the other half did not). Those who received the antibiotics saw a 10,000 fold loss in their gut-bacterial load. In patients who had high antibody titers, there was little difference in how they responded to the vaccine. However, in participants with low levels of flu antibody, there was a severely diminished synthesis of new flu antibody in response to vaccine in the antibiotic condition, as compared to the non-antibiotic condition (5).
For the average person, there are two pertinent takeaways from the study. First, maintain influenza antibody titers by getting your flu shot annually. Second, do what you can - eating healthily, with lots of fiber and colorful food, for instance (6) - particularly in the time leading up to flu vaccine season. Because with the flu vaccine, as with what seems like so much else these days, the microbiome is implicated, yet again.
