A new type of coronavirus is identified as the probable cause of the mysterious pneumonia outbreak in Wuhan, as reported by Betsy McKay, senior writer for the Wall Street Journal. 59 people have become sick due to the virus, with seven in critical condition. In addition, a 61-year-old man died on Saturday, the first fatality reported to date. Although Chinese scientists have not confirmed that the coronavirus is the underlying cause of the illness, they have found the virus in patients.
Named for the crown-like spikes characteristic to the virus’ structure, coronaviruses multiply and mutate rapidly. A zoonotic virus, coronaviruses typically infects pigs, cats, and other animals. Bats are considered to be natural reservoirs. Seven strains of coronaviruses are known to infect humans, including the virus in Wuhan, causing illnesses in the respiratory tract. While four strains cause common colds, two other strains rank “among the deadliest of human infections” including SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) and MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome). The virus in Wuhan appears milder than SARS or MERS.
A commercial city in Central China and the capital of Hubei province, Wuhan has a population of over 11 million and is the seventh largest Chinese city. Virologists and epidemic experts such as Michael Osterholm from the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota describes Wuhan as having “all the ingredients for a coronavirus outbreak” such as “a big, densely populated city with live animal markets where people and possibly infected pigs, bats or other mammals mingle. Recent outbreaks of coronaviruses have killed thousands of pigs in China.”
