Researchers found that injecting mice tumors with inactivated influenza virus can shrink tumors. The idea arose based on a finding that those with influenza-related illness and lung cancer went on to live longer than those without the influenza. The results were either slower growth of the tumors or shrinking of the tumors. Furthermore, immunotherapy for cancer is on the rise, so the increase in immune cells in the tumors via the vaccine boosts the chances that immunotherapy will work against that cancer.
The vaccine has been promising in melanoma cancer and metastatic triple negative breast cancer in mice models. Given genetic similarities between humans and mice, researchers are hopeful of similar results in human studies.
