The small community of Keene, TX is making headlines across the state. Keene recently reported 28 cases of mumps among school-aged children. The average annual amount of mumps cases in the entire state of Texas is typically 20.
According The Dallas Morning News, health officials have tracked the outbreak to a family that was infected in Arkansas (where rates of mumps outbreaks are some of the highest in the country) and brought the virus back home with them to Keene. About 3% of the school children in Keene have not been vaccinated for mumps. Keene ISD is requiring these children to stay at home for approximately a month, the incubation period for mumps.
