A Washington State University-led research team demonstrated that mammalian insulin activated an antiviral immunity pathway in mosquitoes, increasing the insects’ ability to suppress the viruses. Since mosquito bites are the primary way humans are infected with West Nile, Zika, and dengue virus, stopping the virus among the insects would protect human health. While it has been known that insulin boosts immune responses in mosquitoes, this is the first time it has been connected to a particular immune response pathway, called JAK/STAT. This arm of immunity has the potential to be activated through the insulin receptor and reduce the overall viral load in the mosquito population.
